Pixel Launcher's Search Bar Evolves Through Multiple Android Versions, Offering New Customization Options

A major overhaul of the Pixel Launcher is underway, with Google testing a feature that would finally allow users to remove the search bar from the home screen entirely.

Google has introduced a series of changes to the Pixel Launcher's search bar across recent Android updates, adding customization features and altering its design. The modifications span Android 16 QPR3 and the Android 17 beta program, with the most significant change being a potential future ability to remove the search bar entirely from the home screen.

Removal Feature in Development

A leaked build of Android 17 QPR1, shared by Mystic Leaks, contains a toggle within Pixel Launcher settings labeled "Show search bar" under Search bar settings. If activated, disabling this toggle removes the persistent search bar from the bottom of the home screen and moves docked application icons closer to the bottom edge. The feature has not been confirmed for inclusion in the stable release of Android 17 QPR1, which is expected later in 2026.

Design Changes in Android 16 QPR3

A March update for Android 16 QPR3 replaced the Material 3 Expressive search bar design with a previous layout. The prior design featured a 'G' logo, microphone, and Lens within a primary container, with a separate circular icon for the AI Mode shortcut, all within a pill-shaped background.

The updated design consolidates all elements—the 'G' logo, AI Mode shortcut, microphone, and Lens—into a single container. The AI Mode shortcut now sits to the left of the microphone. This change aligns the Pixel Launcher search bar with the Google app's Search homescreen widget, indicating increased integration of the Google app's search functionality into the Pixel Launcher.

Functional Enhancements

A functional change in this update allows users to customize the AI Mode shortcut by long-pressing the search bar. Available shortcut options include: Live, Translate (text), Song Search, Weather, Translate (camera), Sports, Dictionary, Homework, Finance, Saved, and News. The option to completely disable the shortcut remains available.

Features in Android 17 Beta 1

Android 17 beta 1, released on February 13, 2026, introduced several search bar and UI modifications.

Search Bar as Google Widget

The home screen search bar now functions as the Google widget, replacing the previous design. Methods to revert to the older Pixel Launcher search bar design are no longer available.

Thinner Design and Customizable Shortcut

The search bar in Android 17 beta 1 features a slimmer design compared to Android 16. The default AI Mode shortcut within the search bar is now customizable, allowing users to swap it for tools such as Gemini Live, Translate, Song Search, Weather, or Dictionary. Tapping the shortcut updates the search bar display and launches the chosen feature.

Third-Party Search Providers

App developer Kieron Quinn identified hidden settings in Android 17 beta 1 enabling users to select alternative search providers for the search box. Options can include DuckDuckGo, Mozilla Firefox, Chrome, Pixel Search, and Google Maps. Any application can be set as a search provider if its first widget does not require a configuration UI before being added to the home screen.

This setting also controls the app displayed on the "minus one" Discover screen, though currently only the Google app has been approved for this placement. These changes are likely influenced by antitrust regulations, which may also lead to similar adjustments for the Discover screen in specific regions. The persistence of these alterations in the final stable Android 17 release is currently unknown, as the operating system is in its beta phase.

Removal of At a Glance Widget

Android 17 beta 1 also introduces the ability to remove the At a Glance widget from the home screen, a feature previously tested with select users in Android 16 QPR3 betas.

Additional UI Adjustments in Android 17 Beta 1

Minor UI adjustments in Android 17 beta 1 include a refreshed brightness icon in Quick Settings and the addition of a settings icon at the bottom of the volume panel for clearer access to controls.

Update Rollout

The design change that consolidated all search bar elements first appeared in Android 17 Beta 1 but was reverted in Beta 2. Its subsequent inclusion in Android 16 QPR3 suggests this change is intended for the stable release.
