View source

Multiple fatal incidents, including stabbings and police shootings, have been reported across Sydney and Melbourne in recent days, leading to ongoing investigations and several arrests. These events include a fatal intervention at a Melbourne train station, a stabbing in a busy Sydney shopping strip by an individual who had absconded from mental health care, a fatal police shooting in inner Sydney, and a stabbing at a Sydney residence.

Mernda Station Fatal Stabbing, Melbourne

On Friday evening, February 16, at approximately 5:50 PM, 22-year-old Aidan Becker was fatally stabbed at Mernda train station in Melbourne. Mr. Becker, an off-duty security guard, reportedly intervened to protect a 14-year-old boy who was allegedly being assaulted and robbed by a group of teenagers.

After Mr. Becker escorted the 14-year-old boy away from the immediate area, four individuals allegedly followed them. Mr. Becker was then reportedly assaulted with physical force and edged weapons, sustaining fatal stab wounds. He died at the scene despite bystander resuscitation attempts. The 14-year-old boy sustained facial injuries, including a broken nose, but was not stabbed and has since been discharged from the hospital. Police later recovered a machete nearby, with the specific weapon used in the attack remaining under investigation. Court documents allege an 18-year-old was armed with a machete during the alleged robbery of the 14-year-old's phone and power bank.

Four male teenagers were apprehended in connection with the incident: a 16-year-old, two 17-year-olds, and an 18-year-old identified as Mike Pikos. The 16-year-old, one 17-year-old, and Mr. Pikos (18) have been charged with murder and armed robbery. Mr. Pikos appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court and was remanded in custody, scheduled to return to court in June. The second 17-year-old is in hospital under police supervision and awaiting questioning. Authorities confirmed that all four individuals were known to police. Two females present at the incident are assisting police with inquiries but are not in custody.

Detective Acting Inspector Nigel L’Estrange described Mr. Becker's actions as an attempt to protect another individual without aggression.

Mr. Becker was an off-duty security guard at The Alfred Hospital, which expressed sadness over his death. The community has rallied in support of Mr. Becker’s family, with a donation page raising significant funds and a vigil held at Mernda station a week after the incident. The family of the 14-year-old boy issued a statement acknowledging Mr. Becker's courage.

The incident has intensified concerns regarding youth crime and public safety in the Mernda area. Crime Statistics Agency Victoria data indicates a rise in criminal incidents on public transport in the City of Whittlesea. In response, the state government announced it would deploy its new violence reduction unit to Mernda. Police patrols, including protective services officers (PSOs) at Mernda station, are continuing with additional patrols planned. Victoria's Attorney-General, Sonya Kilkenny, stated that teenagers under 18 involved in such crimes might face charges under new "adult crime, adult time" laws.

Potts Point Fatal Police Shooting, Sydney

On Tuesday, February 13, at approximately 10:50 AM, an armed man was fatally shot by police in Potts Point, inner Sydney. Police responded to a unit complex on St Neot Avenue following reports of an armed man entering the building and allegedly assaulting two women.

Assistant Commissioner Peter McKenna stated that the women, aged 48 and 56, reportedly resided in separate units within the complex. Initial indications suggest the man did not know the women or live in the complex. Both women were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening head and facial injuries; one sustained injuries consistent with a weapon assault, while the other's injuries were consistent with blunt force trauma.

NSW Police reported that officers encountered the man, who was allegedly seen with a knife and threatened officers. Officers attempted to incapacitate the man using a Taser, but it was ineffective.
