X Rolls Out Redesigned Video Player & "React with Video" Feature on iOS
X has released two significant video-related updates for its iOS application, reinforcing the platform's broader push into immersive video content and interactive engagement.
Immersive Video Player: Full-Screen by Default
The new player expands videos to full screen with a single tap, and users can swipe up to seamlessly navigate to the next clip.
Nikita Bier, X's head of product, announced the rollout of a redesigned video player aimed at improving mobile video consumption. The update brings a full-screen, swipeable experience similar to other short-form video platforms.
However, some users have reported that the update forces videos into a cropped, full-screen view, eliminating the option to view content in its original aspect ratio. Bier confirmed that portrait orientation is the intended format, adding that X will discontinue cropping vertical content going forward.
This rollout follows X's global launch of a dedicated vertical video feed last year, alongside the integration of AI-driven tools such as Grok's text-to-video generation. Notably, Grok's image-generation feature remains restricted to paying subscribers after it was found to generate inappropriate content.
New "React with Video" Feature
"Commentary is a key part of the platform, and video can enhance it," said Nikita Bier.
On Tuesday, X introduced "React with Video," a feature that allows users to post video responses to other users' content as an alternative to quote posts or reposts. The feature is currently available on iOS, with plans to extend it to Android and web users.
Users can record a video reply via the repost button, with options including green screen or split screen modes. X states the feature aims to help creators connect with audiences by providing richer feedback through facial expressions and tone.
Background & Recent Changes
X has been aggressively refining its product strategy. The platform recently wound down its Communities feature to focus on more direct connections. Meanwhile, adjustments to the creator revenue-sharing program faced significant backlash, forcing a partial rollback.
Other recent updates include:
- "Paid Partnership" labels for sponsored content
- New ad formats linking posts directly with products
- Revamped Creator Subscriptions featuring exclusive threads and shareable cards
- Reduced payouts for clickbait content
As of March 2026, X reports 550 million users, up from 520 million in December 2025, signaling continued growth amid its feature overhaul.
