Three elderly Austrian nuns, previously relocated from their convent, have been granted permission to reside at their former residence, Kloster Goldenstein, indefinitely. This allowance is contingent upon adherence to specific conditions established by Church authorities, primarily concerning their social media engagement.
Background of Relocation and Return
Sisters Bernadette (88), Regina (86), and Rita (82) are the last three nuns associated with the Kloster Goldenstein convent, located in Elsbethen, near Salzburg. In December 2023, they were moved from the convent to an elder care facility. Subsequently, in September, the nuns returned to the convent with the assistance of former students and a locksmith. This action was contrary to the directives of Provost Markus Grasl from Reichersberg Abbey, who had called for their return to the care home, characterizing their decision as "completely incomprehensible."
Public Engagement and Social Media Activity
The situation attracted international public attention. Supporters provided the nuns with assistance, including food, electricity, and management of their social media presence. Videos depicting the nuns' daily lives, such as prayer, meals, and Sister Rita's exercise routines, were shared online. The Goldenstein nuns' social media accounts garnered significant followers, with approximately 100,000 on Instagram and several thousand on Facebook.
Resolution and Conditions for Residence
After a period of nearly three months, a resolution was reached. Harald Schiffl, a spokesman for Provost Grasl, informed the Austrian Press Agency (APA) that the nuns would be allowed to remain at Kloster Goldenstein. This permission is subject to specific conditions, which include:
- Cessation of all social media activities.
- Ensuring that the enclosed section of the convent is accessible only to members of the religious order.
In exchange for adhering to these conditions, the nuns will be permitted to continue residing at the convent and will receive medical care and spiritual support from a priest.
