Parenting Stress on the Rise: 97% of Parents Report Strain, Survey Finds
A new national survey conducted by Ipsos on behalf of The Kids Mental Health Foundation reveals that 97% of parents with children under 18 experienced parenting-related stress in the past month, with 30% reporting that they feel this stress "often."
"Nearly half (46%) of stressed parents said their stress makes their children more anxious."
Among the parents who reported feeling stressed, the top sources of tension were clear. Children's behavioral issues were cited by 35% of respondents, while children's emotional and mental health was a close second, mentioned by 26% of parents.
Expert Guidance for a Modern Challenge
Ariana Hoet, executive clinical director of The Kids Mental Health Foundation and a pediatric psychologist at Nationwide Children's Hospital, noted that many parents are struggling in part because they lack a model for how to focus on their children's mental health.
Her recommendations for parents include:
- Care for your own mental health first.
- Identify specific causes of your stress.
- Build daily habits such as regular conversations and consistent routines.
