Pope Leo XIV has conducted a visit to Istanbul's Sultan Ahmed Mosque, commonly known as the Blue Mosque. This marks his first visit to a Muslim place of worship since he began his papacy in May.
Upon entering the structure, the Pontiff was observed bowing. According to reports, he did not participate in prayer during this visit, distinguishing his actions from those of his two predecessors.
The Vatican released a statement indicating that Pope Leo undertook the tour "in a spirit of reflection and listening, with deep respect for the place and for the faith of those who gather there in prayer."
This event is part of Pope Leo's ongoing four-day trip to Turkey. Following his visit to Turkey, he is scheduled to travel to Lebanon.
Subsequently, Pope Leo was received by Patriarch Bartholomew, the leader of the Eastern Orthodox Church, at St George's Cathedral in Istanbul.
