The verbal sparring between Smart and Cristobal at the Spurrier Awards captured immediate online interest.
Smart's Initial Comments
During the event, Smart took the stage to recognize Georgia cornerback Ellis Johnson IV as the Football Writers Association of America Defensive Freshman of the Year. While doing so, Smart directed humorous, yet pointed, remarks toward Cristobal. Referencing Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) money, Smart advised caution around the Miami coach.
Smart stated, "He's still got another year left. You gotta be careful around Mario, sometimes he'll take your players." The two coaches share a history, having previously coached together at Alabama from 2013-2015.
Cristobal's Response
When it was his turn to speak, Cristobal promptly responded to Smart's earlier comments. He began by praising former Georgia quarterback Carson Beck's performance, attributing it to "great coaching." Cristobal then delivered a direct jab at Smart, referencing Georgia's absence from the recent college football playoffs.
Cristobal delivered a pointed response, remarking, "When you have all that time to sit at home watching us play on TV throughout the playoffs, when you don't take care of business…"
He continued, "You know, congratulations on the SEC, the championship, that's awesome. We were 5-0 against the SEC, I don't know what you were." This remark highlighted Miami's undefeated record against SEC opponents during the past season.
Humorous Jabs at Florida
Both coaches also took the opportunity to direct lighthearted comments toward the University of Florida, with legendary Gators head coach Steve Spurrier present in the audience. Smart engaged Spurrier directly, making a joke about his daughter's real estate business benefiting from the frequent coaching changes at Florida.
Smart also acknowledged Gainesville's notable status as a basketball town, drawing further laughter. The playful jabs added another layer of entertainment to the awards ceremony.
