The death toll from floods in Indonesia has exceeded 500, with an additional 500 individuals reported missing and thousands injured. The floods, which commenced last week, have impacted approximately 1.4 million people.
The disaster was caused by a rare cyclone that formed over the Malacca Strait, affecting three Indonesian provinces: Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra.
Rescue operations are ongoing, with workers facing challenges accessing affected areas due to impassable roads. Infrastructure damage includes washed-away bridges and roadways covered in mud and debris. Efforts to clear roads and locate missing individuals are underway, particularly in areas like West Sumatra's Twin Bridges landmark, where significant mud and debris accumulation has been reported.
Beyond Indonesia, other parts of Asia, including Thailand, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka, have also experienced fatalities from recent torrential rain and storms.
