Microsoft Expands Edge and Copilot with AI-Driven Automation and Deeper Browser Integration
Microsoft has announced a suite of new features for its Edge browser and Copilot AI assistant, focusing on deeper browser integration and a new system for automating background tasks. The updates are designed to expand Copilot's ability to analyze user activity and perform routine jobs via cloud computing.
Edge Browser Integration
Microsoft is introducing new AI features for Edge that center on the Copilot chatbot. Users can now ask Copilot questions based on information from all open tabs, compare products, or summarize articles. The company states that users can select which of these experiences to enable.
New Edge Features:"We are retiring 'Copilot Mode,' which previously included agentic capabilities such as booking reservations. Those features have been moved to the 'Browse with Copilot' tool."
- "Study and Learn" Mode: An AI-powered tool that converts articles into study sessions or interactive quizzes.
- AI Podcasts: A tool that turns open tabs into AI-generated podcasts.
- AI Writing Assistant: An assistant that appears when users type on webpages.
- Browsing History Access: Copilot can now access browsing history (with permission) to provide more relevant answers.
- Long-Term Memory: A new feature for Copilot on desktop and mobile that tailors responses based on past conversations.
- Redesigned New Tab Page: A unified page that combines chat, search, web navigation, and the "Journeys" feature (which organizes browsing history into categories).
- Mobile Screen Sharing: A feature allowing users to share their screen with Copilot and discuss what they see. Microsoft states visual cues will indicate when Copilot is active.
Copilot Tasks Background Automation
Microsoft has introduced a preview of "Copilot Tasks," an AI system designed to automate routine tasks in the background. The system operates using its own cloud-based computer and browser, allowing it to manage jobs without burdening the user's device.
Users can describe tasks to Copilot Tasks using natural language. The system can be assigned to complete jobs on a recurring, scheduled, or one-time basis and will provide a report upon completion.
Example Applications:- Organizing and canceling subscriptions.
- Converting emails, attachments, and images into slide decks.
- Identifying urgent emails and drafting responses.
- Planning events, such as birthday parties.
- Monitoring new apartment listings, including setting up home tours.
Permissions and Availability
Microsoft stated that Copilot Tasks will request user permission before executing significant actions, such as making payments or sending messages. Currently, Copilot Tasks is available as a research preview to a limited group of testers. Interested users can join a waitlist via Microsoft's website.
