A winter storm is affecting the Northeastern United States with snow and ice, potentially impacting travel for residents.
Northeast Region Impact
A low-pressure system, originating in Pennsylvania and moving towards Maine, is forecast to deliver 6 inches or more of snow across several states. This system is expected to disrupt the Tuesday evening commute.
Parts of Appalachia, particularly along the Virginia and West Virginia border, are predicted to experience widespread icing. This condition could create hazardous surfaces on roadways and sidewalks.
Specific forecasts indicate that areas of New York, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine may receive at least half an inch of snow by Wednesday morning. The heaviest snowfall, estimated at 5 to 10 inches, is expected in a corridor extending from the Poconos in Pennsylvania to coastal Maine, with snowfall rates potentially exceeding one inch per hour.
Official Responses
Maine Governor Janet Mills issued a statement advising caution for travelers, recommending residents ensure winter emergency supplies are stocked, and suggesting neighbors check on older individuals. Down East Maine could see up to a foot of snow.
In New Jersey, Governor Phil Murphy declared a state of emergency for five northern counties, identified as the areas most likely to be severely affected by the storm system.
Prior Storm Activity
This Northeastern weather event follows significant snowfall across multiple Midwestern states during the preceding weekend. Northwestern Indiana and northern Illinois recorded 6 to 11 inches of snow, with Chicago establishing a new record for November daily snowfall. Milwaukee officials declared a snow emergency after the city received 6 inches to a foot of snow.
Western U.S. System
Concurrently, a distinct winter storm system is projected to bring snow to parts of Colorado, New Mexico, and Wyoming from Tuesday evening through Thursday morning. The National Weather Service office in Boulder advised preparations for a slow and hazardous Wednesday morning commute in these areas.
The Northeastern system is anticipated to move into Canada by Wednesday morning.
