Chinese Factory Halts Sex Doll Production Amid Investigation
A factory located in China has ceased production following an investigation initiated by local authorities. The inquiry focuses on the manufacturing of customizable sex dolls, which were reportedly available for sale on prominent online shopping sites and social media platforms.
Chinese state-owned news outlet The Paper reported that local officials are prioritizing this issue.
E-commerce Platform Responses
Last month, the online retailer Shein, headquartered in Singapore, implemented a global ban on all sex doll sales. This decision followed public feedback concerning dolls described as having a childlike appearance. Shein stated it had "strengthened its keyword blacklist to further prevent attempted circumvention of product listing restrictions by sellers."
AliExpress has also faced scrutiny regarding the sale of sex dolls exhibiting childlike characteristics. French authorities have commenced an investigation into the company regarding this matter. In November, Reuters reported that AliExpress banned a seller of sex dolls. AliExpress indicated that it had previously "repeatedly denied ever selling sex toys on any platform" prior to implementing this action.
International Stance
Sweden has also indicated its intention to take action against online retailers involved in the sale of these types of dolls. Swedish Social Services Minister Camilla Waltersson Gronvall informed AFP that e-commerce companies are expected to assume responsibility and take all necessary steps to end the marketing of sexual dolls that resemble children. She added that the government would consider legislative measures if adequate progress is not observed.
