Warner Bros. Explores "Game of Thrones" Feature Film on Aegon's Conquest

Warner Bros. Pictures has initiated development on a feature film set within the "Game of Thrones" universe, with Beau Willimon attached as the screenwriter. The project aims to depict King Aegon I Targaryen's conquest of Westeros, an pivotal event that predates the main series by three centuries. The film's advancement is dependent on several factors, including the pending acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery by Paramount Skydance.

Project Details Unveiled

Warner Bros. Pictures is developing a new feature film derived from George R.R. Martin's acclaimed "Game of Thrones" literary works. Beau Willimon, recognized for his contributions to "Andor" and as co-creator of "House of Cards," is penning the screenplay for what is conceptualized as a large-scale production.

The film's narrative will center on King Aegon I Targaryen's conquest of Westeros, an event preceding the main series by three centuries.

Aegon I is celebrated as the founder of the Targaryen dynasty, a family central to the "Game of Thrones" franchise across various HBO productions, including the original series, "House of the Dragon," and "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms."

Background and Prior Discussions

The concept of a "Game of Thrones" feature film has been discussed on previous occasions. Franchise creator George R.R. Martin had previously indicated that both HBO and Warner Bros. Pictures were independently exploring adaptations of the Aegon's Conquest story. While HBO considered a limited series, Warner Bros. focused on a feature film.

In 2013, original series showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss reportedly proposed concluding the main "Game of Thrones" series with three feature films. However, this proposal was not adopted by HBO, which at the time prioritized its subscription-based business model.

Studio Acquisition and Future Prospects

The current status and future progression of the film, along with other Warner Bros. projects, are subject to the studio's anticipated sale. Warner Bros. Discovery is in the process of being acquired by Paramount Skydance, a deal that awaits regulatory approval and is projected to finalize in the fall.

This change in ownership could significantly influence the continuation or discontinuation of projects currently in development.

David Ellison, a Paramount executive, has previously expressed a positive view of the "Game of Thrones" franchise. It is also important to note that not all projects entering development in the "Game of Thrones" universe ultimately proceed to full production.

Other "Game of Thrones" Universe Productions

Beyond this newly announced film, HBO continues to develop multiple projects within the "Game of Thrones" universe. These include an animated series centered on the character known as the Sea Snake.

Currently, two "Game of Thrones"-based series are airing on HBO:

  • House of the Dragon: Its third season is scheduled for release this summer, with a fourth and final season currently planned.
  • A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: This series is currently in production for its second season, expected to air next year.
