FBI Arrests Suspect in 2021 Pipe Bomb Case
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has arrested an individual in connection with pipe bombs discovered near the U.S. Capitol complex in January 2021. Three sources familiar with the investigation confirmed the arrest to NPR.
The suspect, identified as a male, was apprehended in the Woodbridge, Virginia, area, approximately 35 miles from Washington D.C. Information regarding the arrest was anticipated to be released in a press conference.
Investigation Background
The pipe bombs were located near the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and Republican National Committee (RNC) headquarters hours prior to the events at the Capitol on January 6, 2021. The FBI's multi-year investigation into the incident involved approximately 1,000 interviews and the review of nearly 40,000 video files. A $500,000 reward had been offered for information leading to an arrest in the case. Recent reports indicated an intensified focus on the investigation by new leadership within the FBI and the Department of Justice during the current year.
