Zelensky Proposes Exchange: Patriots for Ukrainian Interceptor Drones
President Volodymyr Zelensky proposed on March 3 an exchange of U.S.-made Patriot interceptor missiles for Ukrainian interceptor drones. This suggestion was made in the context of recent Iranian Shahed attack drone operations in the Middle East.
Ukraine's Urgent Need for Air Defense
Ukraine is experiencing a significant shortage of PAC-3 missiles, which are utilized for defense against Russian ballistic missile attacks. This deficit leaves crucial areas vulnerable to ongoing threats.
Underscoring the severity of the situation, Yurii Ihnat, head of the Air Force's communications department, had indicated in early February that some Ukrainian air defense systems were operating with depleted missile inventories due to shortages, amid continued threats of Russian attacks.
U.S. Faces Drone Threat, Ukraine Offers Expertise
Meanwhile, U.S. forces and their allies in the Middle East have encountered extensive Shahed drone bombardments, following U.S.-Israeli strikes.
Ukraine, for its part, has established experience in the production and deployment of interceptor drones effective against Shahed drones.
An "Equal Exchange" to Protect the Skies
Zelensky emphasized the criticality of air defense, stating the paramount concern.
"How to protect the sky" is the primary concern.
He noted that while the U.S. and other countries possess stockpiles of Patriot interceptor missiles, these systems may not provide comprehensive protection against a high volume of Shahed drones, underscoring Ukraine's PAC-3 deficit.
He characterized the proposed arrangement as an "equal exchange," where Ukraine would provide interceptors in return for Patriot missiles.
