Harry Maguire Handed Suspended Sentence in Greek Appeal Trial
Manchester United defender Harry Maguire received a 15-month suspended sentence on Wednesday following a nightclub scuffle involving police officers on the Greek island of Mykonos in August 2020. The sentence is suspended for three years.
Conviction Charges and Appeal Process
Maguire was convicted on charges including minor bodily harm, insulting police officers, attempted bribery, and unlawful violence against police officers. The England international had previously received a 21-month suspended sentence shortly after the incident but appealed this ruling, leading to a new trial on the island of Syros. The appeals trial experienced several delays, including a lawyers' strike.
Maguire Maintains Innocence
Maguire, who was not present at Wednesday's trial, has consistently denied wrongdoing.
He stated in 2020 that he, his family, and friends were the victims.
Calls for Sanctions from Police Representative
Ioannis Paradissis, a lawyer representing the police officers involved, indicated that Maguire had not apologized. Paradissis also called upon Maguire's club and the English Football Association to consider sanctions against the player. He questioned the appropriateness of an individual with a criminal record for violence against police officers continuing to play for national teams and as a public figure. The police officers had expressed a hope for an apology as a gesture of respect.
Further Appeal Option
Maguire has the option to challenge Wednesday’s decision at Greece’s Supreme Court in Athens.
