Utah Mammoth Acquires MacKenzie Weegar in Significant Trade with Calgary Flames
The Utah Mammoth and Calgary Flames have officially finalized a significant trade involving defenseman MacKenzie Weegar. The deal sees Utah acquire Weegar in exchange for defenseman Olli Maatta, prospect Jonathan Castagna, and three second-round draft choices in 2026.
Weegar Bolsters Utah's Defense
Utah General Manager Bill Armstrong expressed his enthusiasm for the acquisition, highlighting Weegar's qualities.
"Weegar is a high-end defenseman with leadership and work ethic, expected to solidify the team's defense in their pursuit of the playoffs."
Flames General Manager Craig Conroy confirmed that both Weegar and Maatta, who were protected by no-trade clauses, approved the transaction.
Weegar brings a versatile two-way game to the Mammoth. He is under contract for an additional five years at a $6.25 million cap hit, providing long-term stability. This season, he averaged a significant 23:06 time-on-ice per game for the Flames. His role in Utah is anticipated to complement the existing defensive lineup, with a potential placement on the second pairing.
Flames Focus on Future with Draft Capital and Prospects
From Calgary's standpoint, the transaction is designed to provide valuable future assets. While the return did not include a singular high-end young player, the three 2026 second-round picks offer significant opportunities for drafting future NHL contributors. Notably, one of these picks originated from the New York Rangers and is anticipated to be early in the second round, enhancing its value.
Olli Maatta: A Veteran Presence for Calgary
Veteran defenseman Olli Maatta now joins the Flames. With Utah, he had been a frequent healthy scratch, averaging only 12:03 time-on-ice this season, a figure significantly below his career average. Maatta is under contract for two more years at a $3.5 million cap hit and could potentially serve as a future trade asset for Calgary.
Jonathan Castagna: A Promising Prospect for the Flames
Also moving to Calgary is Jonathan Castagna, a 20-year-old center currently playing college hockey at Cornell University. Castagna, a 2023 No. 70 overall pick, has had a strong year in collegiate play and was previously considered a notable prospect within Utah's system.
