Bruce Pearl Confirms Nepotism in Son Steven's Auburn Coaching Appointment

Former Auburn head coach Bruce Pearl has confirmed that nepotism contributed to his son, Steven Pearl, being appointed as the head coach for the Auburn basketball team. Steven Pearl is currently in his inaugural season, with the team holding a 16-14 record and positioned on the NCAA Tournament bubble.

"Did I help my son get the (Auburn) job, nepotism? Of course, I did."

Background on the Coaching Transition

Steven Pearl has been involved with the Auburn program since 2014, when his father, Bruce Pearl, began his tenure as head coach. Bruce Pearl's record at Auburn was 244-123, including a Final Four appearance and an SEC regular season title in the previous season. Following a 32-6 season, Bruce Pearl resigned, and Steven Pearl was promoted from associate head coach to head coach.

Performance and Tournament Outlook

Regarding the current season, Bruce Pearl stated that Auburn needs to win at least one more game to secure a spot in the NCAA Tournament.

ESPN's Paul Finebaum noted in mid-February that Steven Pearl's initial tenure has been challenging. Finebaum indicated that if the team transitions from a Final Four appearance to missing the NCAA Tournament, fan sentiment would likely be negative.
