Bruce Johnston Departs The Beach Boys' Touring Lineup After Six Decades

Bruce Johnston has announced his departure from The Beach Boys' touring lineup after over six decades with the band. Johnston, a multi-talented musician serving as a vocalist, songwriter, bassist, and keyboardist, joined the group in April 1965. His initial role was to fill in for founding member Brian Wilson during live performances. He quickly became a staple, contributing his first studio vocals to "California Girls" that same year before becoming a permanent member.

A Legacy of Contributions

Johnston's influence extended to songwriting, where he holds credits on several notable Beach Boys songs, including "Wild Honey" (1967), "Surf's Up" (1971), and "Pet Sounds" (1966).

He briefly stepped away from the band in 1972 to explore a solo career, during which he released the album Going Public and several dance-oriented singles. Johnston's return in 1978 was at Brian Wilson's request, where he played a pivotal role in L.A. (Light Album), which he solely produced.

Johnston's "Part Three"

Johnston shared with Rolling Stone that his departure signifies "Part Three" of his musical journey.

"Part Three" of his musical career, focusing on songwriting and developing a speaking-engagement career.

He indicated plans to perform with The Beach Boys on special occasions, including an event at The Hollywood Bowl, affirming his continued connection to the band's enduring musical legacy.

Mike Love's Acknowledgment

Mike Love, the sole remaining original touring member, acknowledged Johnston's significant contributions across his roles as a songwriter, vocalist, and keyboardist. Love expressed full support for Johnston's new focus on songwriting and recording, anticipating future studio collaborations and confirming Johnston's participation in special performances.

New Touring Member Introduced

Chris Cron, frontman of the Beach Boys tribute act Pet Sounds Live, will assume Johnston's role in the touring band. Cron has been shadowing the band since late February, preparing for his new responsibilities. He will continue to lead his cover band when The Beach Boys are not on tour.
