Blackhawks, Oilers Complete Multi-Player Trade

The Chicago Blackhawks and Edmonton Oilers have completed a trade involving multiple players and a draft pick. The Blackhawks traded forwards Jason Dickinson and Colton Dach to the Oilers in exchange for forward Andrew Mangiapane and a conditional 2027 first-round pick.

Trade Details

  • Blackhawks Receive: Andrew Mangiapane and a conditional 2027 first-round pick (top-12 protected).
  • Oilers Receive: Jason Dickinson and Colton Dach.

The Blackhawks will retain 50 percent of Dickinson's $4.25 million cap hit, as he is a pending unrestricted free agent on an expiring contract. Mangiapane, conversely, is signed through the 2026-27 season with a $3.6 million cap hit; he was recently assigned to the AHL by the Oilers.

The Blackhawks now have zero salary cap retention spots remaining, having previously used spots on Seth Jones and Connor Murphy.

Player Overviews

Jason Dickinson (30)

This season, Dickinson has recorded six goals and 13 points in 47 games. He is expected to play a third-line center checking role for Edmonton, a role where he excels. Dickinson holds a team-best 50.77 Corsi percentage and has won 49.5 percent of 691 faceoffs this season. He has also been a key part of the Blackhawks' top-ranked penalty kill.

While health has been a concern—playing 59 games last season and 47 this season—he did score a career-high 22 goals three seasons ago.

Colton Dach (23)

Drafted by the Blackhawks in 2021, Dach has three goals and nine points in 53 NHL games this season. He is currently in the final year of his entry-level deal.

Andrew Mangiapane (29)

Mangiapane has recorded seven goals and 14 points in 52 games this season. While his recent scoring has been modest, he achieved a career-high 35 goals in the 2021-22 season with the Calgary Flames.

Blackhawks' Rebuild Strategy

The Blackhawks, currently near the bottom of the NHL standings, continue their rebuild by consistently accumulating early-round draft picks.

The organization now boasts a significant collection of future draft capital.

They possess two first-round and three second-round picks in 2026, two first-round and two second-round picks in 2027, and one first-round and two second-round picks in 2028. This substantial accumulation is in addition to 11 first-round and five second-round picks acquired in the previous four drafts.
