Australian Father Suffers Severe Injuries in Philippine Motorbike Accident
Accident Details
Daniel Rapa, a 40-year-old Australian, sustained severe injuries in a motorbike accident in Bohol, Philippines, in February. Mr. Rapa was riding home when he reportedly drove into an open roadwork site that lacked proper signage.
Severe Injuries and Medical Journey
He was diagnosed with multiple head lacerations and a serious spinal cord contusion at the C5 level. This resulted in severe weakness in both legs, spasticity in his lower limbs, and loss of movement in his fingers.
Due to the lack of a specialist spinal surgeon in Bohol, Mr. Rapa was transferred to a hospital in Cebu. He underwent complex spinal decompression surgery, where his C4 disc and C5 vertebra and disc were removed and replaced with a hip bone graft.
Following the surgery, Mr. Rapa developed pneumonia, experiencing fluid in his lungs and requiring high-strength intravenous antibiotics. He is currently undergoing daily rehabilitation while hospitalized.
Road to Recovery and Future Goals
The immediate goal for Mr. Rapa's family is to enable him to sit out of bed and transfer safely into a wheelchair for eventual hospital discharge. The long-term objective is to facilitate his return to Australia for specialized spinal rehabilitation to improve his chances of walking again.
Family Seeks Support
Mr. Rapa's family is seeking to raise $100,000 to cover his surgery, medical bills, ongoing care, medical transport, and rehabilitation costs.
