Coroner Confirms Hypothermia Deaths of Chinese Students in Victorian High Country

A Victorian coroner has concluded that two Chinese students, Yuhan Jin (24) and Yewen Wang (30), died from hypothermia in the High Country. The Monash University students were found deceased on October 3, 2025, huddled on a sleeping bag near Mount Bogong, their deaths attributed to exposure to the elements. A forensic pathologist confirmed hypothermia as the medical cause of death for both individuals.

Incident Details: A Treacherous Hike

On October 2, the students began a planned 54-kilometer, three-to-four-day hike. Their route was the Mount Bogong and Big River Firetrail Figure 8 track, starting from Mountain Creek Campground. The coroner's findings indicated the track features steep ascents and exposed sections.

During their time on the mountain, conditions quickly deteriorated. Temperatures plummeted to -3.2 degrees Celsius, accompanied by strong winds, snowfall, hail, and rain. Visibility was also severely poor due to white-out conditions.

Equipment and Unexplained Circumstances

The coroner's report stated that the two women possessed suitable hiking gear. However, when located by experienced hikers Robert and Marguerite Karoly, they were not wearing their outer-shell jackets or beanies, despite having them. The clothing they were wearing at the time of their discovery was deemed insufficient for the prevailing weather conditions.

Yuhan Jin sent a voice message to her mother, describing the climb as difficult and noting rain, snow, and hail within a six-hour period. This was her last communication.

While the pair did not have a tent, they carried a lightweight tarp that could have served as shelter. There was no indication that they attempted to deploy this tarp.

Coroner's Conclusion and Urgent Recommendations

Coroner Ryan determined it was probable that the students experienced disorientation, confusion, and fatigue on the evening of October 2 due to the effects of hypothermia. This condition likely impaired their judgment, leading to their passing from exposure.

"It was probable that the students experienced disorientation, confusion, and fatigue... This condition likely impaired their judgment, leading to their passing from exposure."

In response to these tragic findings, the coroner issued crucial advice for visitors to Mount Bogong and the surrounding area.

The recommendations emphasize the importance of awareness regarding severe weather conditions year-round, thorough planning and preparation, and understanding personal limitations when in challenging environments.
