Britney Spears Voluntarily Enters Treatment Facility Following DUI Arrest

"This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable. Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law."
— Representative for Britney Spears

Britney Spears has voluntarily entered a treatment facility, her representative confirmed, following her arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence in Ventura County, California, on March 4. Reports from TMZ, citing sources with direct knowledge, state she entered a rehabilitation facility in the United States for substance abuse. A court appearance is scheduled for May 4.

Arrest and Legal Proceedings

According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), Spears was taken into custody on March 4 after officers stopped a BMW 430i that was reported for erratic, high-speed driving. Spears was the sole occupant of the vehicle. Officers reported signs of impairment, and she underwent field sobriety tests.

She was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs. Spears was booked into the Ventura County Main Jail and released on the morning of March 5. The results of a chemical test are pending. On April 30, the Ventura County District Attorney's Office charged Spears with a single misdemeanor count of driving under the combined influence of alcohol and at least one drug.

Her arraignment, at which she was not required to appear, was held on a Monday in Ventura. Prosecutors indicated the case would follow standard protocol for defendants with no prior DUI history, no crash or injury, and a low blood-alcohol level. A standard plea offer to a "wet reckless" charge was extended, which typically includes one year of probation, a DUI class, and state-mandated fines and fees. Spears subsequently pleaded guilty to reckless driving involving alcohol, drugs, or both. Penalties included a $571 fine, 12 months of probation, and a three-month substance abuse program.

Statements from Representative

Following the March arrest, a representative for Spears issued the following statement:

"This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable. Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney's life. Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time. Her boys are going to be spending time with her. Her loved ones are going to come up with an overdue needed plan to set her up for success for well being."

In a separate social media post, Spears wrote: "Thank you guys for all your support... spending time with family and friends is such a blessing. Stay kind !!!"

Reports citing sources indicated that people close to Spears encouraged her to seek treatment and that the decision was made, in part, to demonstrate to the court that she was taking the matter seriously. Sources also reported that Spears has been attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings since the arrest.

Recent Social Media Activity

Spears has posted frequent videos on social media showing herself dancing alone in her California home. On a Friday prior to entering treatment, she shared a photo with a caption that read: "When peeps try to make you larger than life ... tell them to BOW. If i ever showed them the fragility of my real heart." On a subsequent Saturday, she posted a dancing video. Another post showed her dancing with objects she later stated were not real knives. Her most recent Instagram post before entering the facility included a video of someone placing fingers in a water-filled bowl of pink flowers and a video of herself dancing.

Career and Personal Background

Spears rose to fame in the late 1990s with hits including "...Baby One Time," "Oops!... I Did It Again," and "Toxic." Her last studio album, Glory, was released in 2016. Her last U.S. performance was in 2018 in Austin, Texas. A planned 2019 Las Vegas residency was postponed and performing was paused indefinitely. In January 2024, Spears stated in a since-deleted Instagram post that she will "never perform in the U.S. again because of extremely sensitive reasons."

Music Catalog Sale

In February 2024, Spears sold the rights to her music catalog to Primary Wave. The catalog includes songs such as "...Baby One More Time," "Oops!... I Did It Again," "Toxic," and others.

Memoir and Film Adaptation

Her 2023 memoir, The Woman in Me, is being adapted into a film by Universal, with Jon M. Chu set to direct. Chu has stated that Spears would be "very involved" in the project.

Conservatorship

Spears was under a 13-year court-ordered conservatorship from 2008 until its termination in 2021. The conservatorship placed her father, Jamie Spears, in control of her career, estate, and financial affairs following a series of public incidents, including a 2007 charge for misdemeanor hit-and-run and driving without a license (which was later dropped) and hospitalizations under temporary psychiatric assessment rulings in 2008.

She has two adult sons, Sean Preston and Jayden James Federline, with her ex-husband Kevin Federline.
