Tetsuya Yamagami, the individual accused of assassinating former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, has issued an apology to Abe's family.

During a court appearance on Thursday, Mr. Yamagami, who had previously pleaded guilty to murder and other associated charges, conveyed his "deepest apologies" to Akie Abe, the widow of the former prime minister.
Background of the Incident
Shinzo Abe was fatally shot on July 8, 2022, in Nara, Japan, during a political campaign event. Mr. Yamagami utilized a homemade firearm in the incident. Mr. Abe was pronounced deceased at a hospital on the same day. His tenure as prime minister was marked by a foreign policy described as hawkish and an economic strategy known as "Abenomics."
