Albany Police Investigate Double Homicide After Mother and Son Found Deceased
Police in Albany have initiated a double homicide investigation following the deaths of 69-year-old Erica Coyne and her 50-year-old son, Lloyd Mitchell. The two were discovered at a residence on Burville Street in Albany on February 8. Mitchell, initially taken into custody as a suspect, later died in hospital, prompting the escalation of the inquiry.
The Western Australia Police Homicide Squad has since confirmed that the investigation is being treated as a double homicide.
Incident Details Unfold
On February 8, emergency services were called to a residence on Burville Street in Albany. Upon arrival, Erica Coyne, 69, was found deceased. Her son, Lloyd Mitchell, 50, was discovered severely injured at the scene.
Mitchell was subsequently taken into custody as a suspect in his mother's death. He was transported to Royal Perth Hospital, where he was placed into an induced coma. He later died while receiving care at the hospital.
Appeals for Public Information
Detective Senior Sergeant Stephen Cleal of the Homicide Squad has appealed to the public for information related to the deaths. He stated that police are working to determine the full circumstances of the incident and believe that individuals within the community may possess relevant details.
Detective Senior Sergeant Cleal also affirmed that police have not identified any ongoing risk to the wider community.
A family representative, Janelle Marion Coyne, also released a statement, urging anyone with information to come forward. The family has expressed a strong desire to understand the events that transpired. Police have assured the public that reports can be made anonymously.
