The Anaheim Ducks have acquired defenseman John Carlson from the Washington Capitals. The trade involves a conditional first-round pick in either the 2026 or 2027 NHL Draft and a 2027 third-round selection.

Ducks General Manager Pat Verbeek stated that John Carlson brings leadership, character, a high hockey IQ, and a presence to the lineup.
Verbeek also noted the team's excitement to add a Stanley Cup winner to complement the group for a push down the stretch.

Anaheim retains the option to transfer its 2026 first-round pick to Washington, even if they miss the 2026 playoffs, by notifying Washington immediately after the selection preceding Anaheim’s first-round choice in the 2026 NHL Draft.
