Disney's 'Robin Hood' Remake Canceled, Filmmaker Confirms

Filmmaker Carlos López Estrada confirmed that a planned photorealistic musical remake of Disney's 1973 animated feature "Robin Hood" is no longer moving forward. Estrada stated during a Reddit AMA that the project is "dead," expressing that he believed it contained unique and special elements, including music.

The Hollywood Reporter initially reported in April 2020 that Estrada was in early development for the Disney+ streaming service. Kari Granlund, who wrote the screenplay for Disney's 2019 "Lady and the Tramp" remake, was reportedly working on the script for this hybrid live-action and CG feature.

Disney's Broader Remake Strategy

Disney continues to prioritize theatrical remakes of its classic animated properties. Projects include a live-action "Tangled" and a "Moana" remake set for theatrical release this summer. Other developments in the pipeline include a "Beauty and the Beast" villain Gaston spinoff and a "Hercules" remake.

Bob Iger, Disney CEO, stated last year that the studio is refocusing efforts on theatrical releases after attempting to increase content for Disney+. He noted that a focus on quantity for streaming platforms does not guarantee quality.

Estrada's Experience at Disney Animation

Estrada also commented on his experience co-directing Disney's 2021 animated feature "Raya and the Last Dragon," describing his time at Disney Animation as both "special and so hard." He mentioned being Disney Animation's first director of color and that he lasted a few years within the company.
