Widespread Itching Reported by GLP-1 Drug Users
Users of GLP-1 weight loss drugs, a class of medications including Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro, are reporting a new side effect: persistent, widespread itching. Previously discussed side effects often related to physical appearance, such as "Ozempic face" or "Ozempic butt," and common gastrointestinal issues.
However, the newly reported itching is described as invisible but distressing.
Patient Experiences
Individuals on platforms like Reddit have described experiencing continuous itching in various body areas, including the back, arms, and legs. Some users reported the itching was severe enough to cause them to scratch to the point of potentially drawing blood, and that it affected their entire body from head to toe.
Medical Perspective
Dr. Anne Peters, an endocrinologist at Keck Medicine of USC, stated that clinical trials show skin issues are reported by 3 to 8 percent of GLP-1 users. She attributes these reactions to either an individual's response to the drug's chemical components or, in some cases, the injection process itself.
Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Hadley King noted that mild skin reactions like itching and redness at the injection site are common with any injection. These are generally believed to be local responses to needle trauma or the injected medication.
Recommendations
For localized symptoms, medical professionals suggest consulting a dermatologist or allergist, or rotating the injection site. If the reactions are more widespread and severe, such as hives, blisters, or extensive itchy patches, patients are advised to stop the medication until the symptoms resolve and seek immediate consultation with a healthcare professional.
