Indonesian Protesters Demand Withdrawal from Trump's 'Board of Peace'
Hundreds of individuals have protested in Jakarta, urging Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto to withdraw from former US President Donald Trump's Board of Peace (BoP).
Growing Opposition Amid Regional Tensions
Public opposition to Indonesia's involvement in the BoP has grown, particularly following US and Israeli military actions against Iran. Calls are also increasing for President Prabowo to rescind an offer to deploy 8,000 troops for a Gaza stabilization force.
Major national Islamic organizations and numerous civil society groups, alongside prominent Indonesians, have signed a petition expressing their opposition.
The petition states that the BoP, chaired by Donald Trump, has conducted military attacks on Iran, thereby transforming it into a "Board of War" and acting against its stated purpose of safeguarding peace. It urges Indonesia's immediate withdrawal.
Protesters on Saturday displayed signs, including "Indonesia is not Israel's security guard" and "Board of Peace is not a solution."
Official Deliberations Underway
President Prabowo has held discussions with former presidents, vice-presidents, foreign ministers, and senior Islamic leaders regarding the Middle East conflict and Indonesia's BoP membership. Reports indicate that the strikes on Iran have led senior Indonesian officials to discuss the country's continued participation in the BoP.
Indonesia's foreign ministry confirmed it is "carefully assessing" its membership. President Prabowo reportedly informed Indonesian Islamic leaders that he would withdraw if he determined the Board of Peace no longer benefited Palestinians.
Indonesia has also offered to mediate in the current conflict, with its Foreign Minister Sugiono stating the country's readiness to facilitate dialogue or mediation.
