Free Dance School in Armidale Tackles Cost of Living Strain
In Armidale, regional New South Wales, a new initiative offers free dance classes to local children, directly addressing the financial strain many families face. Extra-curricular activities like dance are often among the first expenses cut by households struggling with the cost of living.
A "Gift" for Struggling Families
Sixteen-year-old Beatrix Hopf, who began tap and jazz at age six, had to discontinue her classes due to financial constraints. Her mother, Dominique Flynn, stated she could no longer afford the lessons. Beatrix subsequently joined Revelations Dance, a school providing classes at no cost.
Dominique Flynn noted the opportunity was a "gift" for children who lacked the financial means to continue dancing.
Revelations Dance: Founded by a Young Champion
Revelations Dance was established by 12-year-old Annabelle Arkit, an accomplished competitive dancer. Annabelle, who has participated in national competitions and represented Australia at the Dance World Cup in Prague at age 10, founded the school to make dance accessible. She observed that many individuals could not afford dance lessons and wished to provide opportunities similar to those she received.
Annabelle’s mother, Danielle Arkit, co-manages the weekly classes held at St Mark's UNEchurch. While classes are free, families are required to pay a nominal fee of $50-$80 per term for costumes for competitions and showcases. The school supports students from diverse backgrounds, including those in foster care and large families, who might otherwise be unable to participate.
Community Impact and National Recognition
The school has grown from three initial students to over 20 participants, aged nine to 19. Many students are older than Annabelle, their teacher. Beatrix Hopf reported a significant increase in her confidence since joining, highlighting the supportive environment where students "build each other up." Each class begins with a prayer circle, led by Danielle Arkit, where participants can share gratitude.
In January, Annabelle and student Sofie competed in the 2026 Showcase Australian National Dance Championships. Annabelle secured first place (National Champion) for her Broadway routine, and the duo placed second in their section for a performance choreographed by Annabelle. The team is preparing for future performances and competitions.
