NT Police Issue Urgent Floodwater Warning Amid Crocodile Activity

Northern Territory (NT) Police have issued a stark warning against entering floodwaters, following reports of individuals swimming in rivers across affected areas. Acting Commander Penry Buckley Gill emphasized the severe risks posed by the current conditions.

Commander Gill Issues Dual Warning

Acting Commander Penry Buckley Gill stated that crocodiles are highly active in these flood-affected areas. He strongly advised the public against swimming, citing two critical reasons for this caution.

"He advised against swimming for two reasons: the fast-flowing rivers and increased crocodile activity during floods."

Emergency Service Contact Confirmed

Addressing concerns from residents in Katherine regarding difficulties contacting emergency services, Commander Gill clarified that the standing advice remains to call triple zero (000). He acknowledged that there had been earlier "telecommunications issues" and power outages contributing to these difficulties.

Daly River to Remain at Major Flood Level

Jude Scott from the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) provided an update on river conditions, noting that the Daly River is expected to maintain a major flood level for at least one to two weeks. This extended period is due to the river holding a substantial volume of water and its anticipated slow, continued rise.
