Kyiv's Adapting Nightlife
Kyiv's nightclubs, such as Closer, have resumed operations, providing an emotional outlet for residents amidst the ongoing conflict. These venues offer spaces for individuals to gather and cope with the stress of the war.
One attendee described it as maintaining a 'war-life balance.'
Wartime Operations and Challenges
Many Ukrainian music venues closed following the 2022 invasion. However, some, like Closer, reopened within months and now host events almost every weekend. Operating under threats of missile and drone strikes, and frequent energy blackouts, dancing has become a significant emotional release.
Due to nighttime curfews, many events now occur during the day and are smaller in scale. Clubs, like Some People in Kharkiv, located near the Russian border, sometimes host Ukrainian soldiers. This club also functions as a bomb shelter and utilizes a generator during blackouts.
Rave Culture and Resistance
Ukraine's electronic dance music scene has historical ties to resistance, notably after the collapse of the Soviet Empire and the 2014 Ukrainian Revolution. Kyiv's Cxema parties, known for large raves in urban spaces, aimed to create democratic spaces and community for youth facing economic insecurity.
Founder Slava Lepsheiev stated that resistance is now directed against the current enemy, with gatherings serving to maintain strength and offer escapism.
Impact on Artists and Community
The war has significantly altered the scene. Daniel Detcom, a former DJ and techno producer, joined the armed forces, though he continues to produce music and organize parties during leave. He notes the shift to daytime events and the need for preparedness, such as carrying first aid kits.
The reduction in international artists traveling to Ukraine has created opportunities for local DJs and producers, fostering experimentation. Music labels have promoted Ukrainian artists, and funds from events and album sales contribute to the war effort.
Organizers emphasize the role of these events as a form of resistance and support for the country.
