NFL Free Agency Kicks Off: Tampering Window Opens, Deals Emerge

The National Football League's two-day legal tampering period, which allows teams to negotiate with unrestricted free agents, commenced on Monday, March 9, at noon ET. This crucial window precedes the official start of the new league year and free agency, set for Wednesday, March 11, at 4 p.m. ET, when contracts can be formally signed. Reports from the initial day of the window indicated significant financial commitments by some teams and early agreements with several top-ranked free agents.

The NFL's legal tampering period acts as a precursor to the official free agency, allowing teams to negotiate with players before formal contracts can be signed.

Free Agency Timeline and Protocol

The NFL's free agency period officially begins with the start of the new league year on Wednesday, March 11, at 4:00 p.m. ET. At this point, free agents become eligible to formally sign contracts with new teams.

Prior to this, a negotiating window, commonly referred to as the 'legal tampering' period, opened on Monday, March 9, at 12:00 p.m. ET. During this two-day window, players can agree to terms on contracts with new teams, but official signings are restricted until Wednesday.

The league adopted this negotiating window in 2012, aiming to regulate pre-existing communications and unofficial negotiations that historically occurred between teams and agents before the official start of free agency.

Negotiating Rules and Communication

The legal tampering period specifically permits teams to contact the agents of unrestricted free agents to discuss potential contracts. A significant change for the current year is a new regulation allowing teams, for the first time, to directly contact up to five free agents during this two-day window.

While the official window regulates formal contact, informal communication between agents and teams regarding potential free agents is understood to occur even before this period, often during events like the Scouting Combine. The league generally does not actively investigate these early communications unless a clear violation is publicly revealed.

From the start of the negotiating window on Monday, details about tentative agreements frequently emerge through media reports, often provided by agents.

Historically, some players have chosen to opt out of verbally agreed-upon deals during this tentative period before the official signing on Wednesday.

Initial Market Activity and Player Movement

Reports from Monday indicated significant financial activity across the league, with both the Raiders and Titans reportedly spending over $280 million each on player contracts. As of Tuesday, the Raiders were reported to have more than $95 million in available cap space, noted as the highest in the NFL at that time.

Among the reported early agreements, center Tyler Linderbaum signed an $81 million three-year contract with the Raiders. Linderbaum had been ranked as the top available free agent on a prominent list. By Tuesday, 22 of the top 30 players on that same list were reported to have either been signed or tagged.

Notable players reported to be still available as of Tuesday included Trey Hendrickson, Kyler Murray, and Rasheed Walker.
