Country Joe McDonald, Anti-War Icon and Lead Singer of Country Joe and the Fish, Dies at 84

Country Joe McDonald, co-founder and lead singer of the band Country Joe and the Fish, and known for his anti-Vietnam War anthem "I-Feel-Like-I’m-Fixin’-to-Die Rag," passed away on Saturday in Berkeley, California, at the age of 84. His health had recently declined due to Parkinson's disease.

Early Life and Career Beginnings

Born Joseph Allen McDonald in Washington, D.C., in 1942, he grew up in El Monte, California. McDonald served in the U.S. Navy before beginning a career in writing and music in the early 1960s, becoming involved in the political and cultural movements of the Bay Area during this period.

In 1965, McDonald co-founded the band Country Joe and the Fish in Berkeley. The group became part of the San Francisco psychedelic music scene, integrating folk traditions with electric rock and political commentary.

Musical and Activist Career

McDonald emerged as a significant figure within the 1960s protest movement.

The band's song, "I-Feel-Like-I’m-Fixin’-to-Die Rag," became widely associated with anti-war sentiment during the Vietnam era due to its satirical lyrics about war and political leadership.

McDonald performed the song solo at the 1969 Woodstock festival, leading an audience in a call-and-response, a performance that became a significant event of the festival.

Country Joe and the Fish released several recordings and toured extensively in the late 1960s. McDonald continued performing and recording as a solo artist, releasing numerous albums over a career spanning more than 50 years. His work drew from folk, rock, and blues traditions and consistently addressed political and social issues.

Veterans' Advocacy

Despite his opposition to the Vietnam War, McDonald frequently emphasized respect for those who served in the U.S. military. Following his Navy service, he remained engaged with veterans' issues and occasionally performed at events related to veterans and their experiences.
