Masked Spectator Disconnects VAR Monitor in Bundesliga 2 Clash

A masked spectator disconnected a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) monitor during a German second division football match between Preussen Münster and Hertha Berlin. The incident, which occurred at the end of the first half as the referee prepared to review a penalty incident, resulted in a remote VAR decision and the subsequent award of a penalty, which Hertha Berlin converted.

Incident Overview

The event took place on Sunday during a Bundesliga 2 match featuring Preussen Münster and Hertha Berlin. As referee Felix Bickel proceeded to the pitchside monitor to review a potential penalty incident following a VAR intervention, a masked individual reportedly entered an interior area and unplugged the technical equipment. This action caused the monitor screen to become blank.

Preussen Münster stated that "a masked spectator from the active fan section illegally entered the pitch and unplugged the technical equipment."

VAR Decision and Match Impact

With the on-field monitor non-functional, VAR official Katrin Rafalski, located in Cologne, made the decision remotely. Rafalski ruled that a foul had occurred and instructed for a penalty to be awarded.

Hertha Berlin subsequently converted the penalty. The match concluded with Hertha Berlin winning 2–1.

Context and Club's Response

German media reported that home fans simultaneously displayed a banner in the home section shortly after the technical malfunction. The banner reportedly displayed the message, "Pull the plug on VAR."

SC Preussen Münster expressed regret over the incident. The club stated its intention to identify and prosecute those responsible for the action. Furthermore, Preussen Münster indicated that immediate measures have been implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future. Initial findings suggested the action was a planned event.
