A woman has been charged with attempted murder and other felonies after allegedly firing multiple shots at a Beverly Hills residence associated with singer Rihanna on a Sunday afternoon. No injuries were reported in the incident, which saw bullets strike the main house, an Airstream trailer, and a neighboring property. The suspect, identified as Ivanna Lisette Ortiz, 35, was apprehended by police shortly after the event and is currently held on $1.875 million bail.
Incident Details
On a Sunday afternoon, law enforcement responded to reports of gunfire at a residence in the Beverly Hills area, identified as belonging to singer Rihanna. The incident occurred around 1:15 p.m. or 1:21 p.m., with police receiving the initial 911 call.
According to reports, Ivanna Lisette Ortiz, 35, allegedly drove a white Tesla to the location and fired multiple shots from the vehicle while it was parked across the street from the property's gate. Estimates of the number of shots fired ranged from approximately 10 shots in police dispatch audio to four shots in some reports. An AR-15-style weapon was reportedly used, though the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) had not initially confirmed weapon details.
One round reportedly penetrated a wall of the main mansion. Bullet holes were visible on the property's front gate. Further investigation revealed that bullets also struck an Airstream trailer located on the property and a neighboring residence.
Those Present
Rihanna, whose legal name is Robyn Fenty, was present at her home during the incident. Her partner, rapper A$AP Rocky (Rakim Mayers), their three children (sons RZA, born May 2022; Riot, born August 2023; and daughter Rocki, born approximately five months prior), Rihanna's mother, and two staff members were also at the property. Two individuals were present in the neighboring house that was struck.
Rihanna and A$AP Rocky were reportedly in the Airstream trailer at the time of the shooting, while the children, Rihanna's mother, and staff were in the main house. Authorities confirmed no injuries were sustained by anyone during the incident.
Arrest and Recovery
Following the shooting, the suspect's vehicle, described as a white Tesla, reportedly fled south on Coldwater Canyon Drive. LAPD officers located the vehicle and tracked it, with assistance from a police helicopter, to a shopping center parking lot in Sherman Oaks, approximately eight miles from the residence.
Ortiz was arrested without incident approximately 30 minutes after the initial 911 call. During the arrest, police recovered an AR-15-style rifle, ammunition, and a blond wig from her vehicle, with additional ammunition found in the trunk. Seven shell casings were also reportedly found in the vehicle.
Charges and Legal Proceedings
Ivanna Lisette Ortiz, 35, from Orlando, Florida, was identified as the suspect. She was booked on suspicion of attempted murder.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman later announced formal charges against Ortiz, which include:
- One count of attempted murder, specifically targeting Rihanna.
- Ten counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, pertaining to Rihanna, her family, two staffers, and two individuals in the neighboring residence.
- Three counts of shooting at an inhabited vehicle or dwelling, specifically targeting Rihanna's house, her trailer, and a neighbor's house.
- One count of shooting at a motor vehicle.
Ortiz is being held on $1.875 million bail. Her arraignment was postponed until March 25, and she is being represented by the Los Angeles public defender's office. A protective order has been issued, requiring Ortiz to avoid contact with Rihanna and A$AP Rocky, their home, and prohibiting her from possessing firearms or ammunition.
If convicted on all charges, Ortiz faces a potential sentence of up to life in a California state prison.
Motive Under Investigation
The motive behind the shooting and any potential connection between Ortiz and Rihanna or A$AP Rocky remain under investigation by the LAPD's Robbery Homicide Division (RHD).
Authorities have not indicated any prior established connection between the suspect and the family. Reports indicate Ortiz had previously made critical social media posts targeting Rihanna, including posts in February falsely alleging Rihanna had AIDS and demanding direct communication. Detectives are working to determine if Ortiz and Rihanna had any prior interaction, how Ortiz allegedly obtained the rifle, and if there were plans to target anyone else.
Suspect's Background
Ortiz is a licensed speech pathologist. Public records indicate a history of previous arrests in Florida, including charges related to bankruptcy in 2013, careless driving in 2021, and domestic violence and battery in 2023.
Court documents also reveal that Ortiz was previously involuntarily committed to a psychiatric facility under Florida's Baker Act prior to 2023. Her attorney confirmed this information, though Ortiz claimed the commitment stemmed from false accusations. In April 2024, a Florida judge granted full physical custody of Ortiz's 10-year-old child to her ex-husband and barred Ortiz from all contact with the child. The court noted "concerning testimony" regarding Ortiz's mental health and observed that an incident she cited in seeking a domestic violence injunction against her ex-husband resulted in her own arrest for domestic violence, at which time she was on probation.
Rihanna's Residence
Rihanna resides in a colonial-style mansion in Beverly Hills. She purchased the property in 2020. Public records indicate the property is owned by a trust associated with Evan Jehle, a member of the advisory board for Rihanna’s Clara Lionel Foundation.
Past Incidents
In 2018, a different individual, Eduardo Leon, was accused of breaking into another residence belonging to Rihanna in the Hollywood Hills. Leon reportedly spent 12 hours inside the home while Rihanna was not present. He later pleaded no contest to felony counts of stalking and vandalism, and a misdemeanor count of resisting arrest, receiving probation.
