Macedonian Groups Withdraw from Moomba Parade Over Disputed Flag

MELBOURNE – Macedonian dance groups have withdrawn from Melbourne's Moomba Parade after being informed they could not display a disputed cultural flag. The decision came just hours before the annual parade was set to begin, impacting the participation of the Federation of Macedonian Cultural Artistic Associations of Victoria.

The Disputed Symbol: Star of Kutlesh

The Federation of Macedonian Cultural Artistic Associations of Victoria had intended to march with the Star of Kutlesh, also known as the Sun of Kutlesh or Vergina Sun flag. This flag was adopted by the Republic of Macedonia as its national flag in 1991, initiating a dispute with Greece, as Greece also claims it as a cultural symbol. In 1995, the Republic of Macedonia adopted an alternative yellow sun design for its flag in response to the ongoing dispute.

Council's Stance and Federation's Withdrawal

The City of Melbourne had previously notified the group that the Star of Kutlesh would not be permitted. The council cited its general ban on displaying cultural symbols while allowing official national flags. Following this notification, hours before the annual parade, the federation announced its non-participation.

Identity Concerns and Official Disappointment

In a social media statement, the federation described the decision as challenging.

Participation without the flag would diminish a key aspect of the community's identity.
The federation also expressed a desire to prevent participants, particularly children, from being exposed to political tensions.

Lord Mayor Nicholas Reece conveyed his disappointment regarding the group's absence. He stated that while the council and the federation had engaged in discussions, the regulations regarding flags at Moomba were clear.
