Society of Camera Operators Announces Annual Awards
The Society of Camera Operators (SOC) announced its annual awards in a livestreamed ceremony, recognizing top talent in the field. Colin Anderson received the camera operator of the year in film award, while Mark Goellnicht won the television category.
Anderson was recognized for his work on the film One Battle After Another, which has also garnered several technical prizes from esteemed organizations including the American Cinema Editors, the Art Directors Guild, and the British Society of Cinematographers. The American Society of Cinematographers is scheduled to announce its own decisions on Sunday.
Colin Anderson Honored for Film Work
Anderson's award specifically acknowledges his contributions to One Battle After Another. He boasts a distinguished career, having worked on significant films such as Star Trek and Star Wars titles, as well as several Paul Thomas Anderson collaborations including There Will Be Blood, The Master, Inherent Vice, and Phantom Thread.
This year, he was also nominated for his work on Marty Supreme. Six years prior, the Society of Camera Operators had already presented him with a lifetime achievement prize, underscoring his lasting impact on the industry.
Mark Goellnicht Wins Television Category
Goellnicht earned his award for his contributions to "The Oner" episode of Apple TV+'s The Studio. His impressive prior credits include major productions like Mad Max: Fury Road and The Great Gatsby.
Industry's Resilience Praised
Matthew Moriarty, president of the Society of Camera Operators, delivered remarks at the ceremony, aptly describing camera operators as "the connective tissue between vision and audience."
Moriarty also noted that despite the "extraordinary challenges" the industry has faced in recent years, the work has remained "bold, inventive, and deeply human," which he attributed to "the enduring strength and resilience of the camera community."
