Leo Lombard Earns First 2026 Rising Star Nod After Standout Opening Round Performance

Gold Coast's Leo Lombard has been recognized as the first Telstra AFL Rising Star nominee for the 2026 season, following the Suns' impressive victory in the Opening Round.

Lombard was a standout performer, contributing two goals and 15 disposals during Gold Coast's commanding 56-point win against Geelong last Friday night. Drafted as the ninth pick in the 2024 Telstra AFL Draft, the Gold Coast Academy graduate featured in four games during his initial season after sustaining a shoulder dislocation in February.

Lombard's strong showing earned him the first Rising Star nomination of the 2026 season, marking a significant turnaround after an injury-plagued debut year.

Overcoming Previous Season's Disappointment

Reflecting on his challenging debut year, Lombard expressed his dissatisfaction. "I was very disappointed in last season. To be honest, I didn't play my best footy at all," he stated.

A crucial conversation with coach Damien Hardwick during the off-season proved to be a turning point. Lombard noted, "he just put a lot of confidence in me and had so much belief in me and what I could do." He added, "Hearing that and hearing what he had to say really built so much confidence in myself and I'm glad I got to showcase it on Friday night."

Stellar Pre-Season and New Forward Opportunities

Lombard's commitment to his preparation for the 2026 season was evident. His pre-season highlights included winning the club's first 2km time trial and maintaining consistent attendance at training sessions.

The recent departures of Sam Flanders, Ben Ainsworth, Connor Budarick, and Malcolm Rosas jnr have created significant opportunities, opening up key positions in the forward line for the 2026 season.

Mastering the Small Forward Role

In the match against the Cats, Lombard demonstrated a balanced game, showcasing both offensive skills and defensive intensity. His efforts significantly contributed to a forward line that was effective in generating turnovers.

"If you told me a year ago I was playing small forward, I wouldn't have had a clue what I'm doing."

Lombard credits his growth in the role to his teammates and coaches. "I've sat in so many meetings with Sam Flanders and Ben Ainsworth … they've taught me a lot as well," he explained. He also highlighted the importance of guidance from senior players and coaching staff: "Sitting there with Touk (Miller), and just getting that role clarity with (forwards coach) Brad Miller, he's really put that belief in me as well."
