View source

The Buffalo Bills have officially begun the process of constructing their roster for the 2026 NFL season. Their initial focus is on securing existing players through new contracts and extensions, aiming to build a solid foundation from within.

Key NFL Offseason Dates

Several important dates mark the NFL offseason calendar, guiding teams through roster building and player acquisition:

  • The legal tampering period commenced at noon EDT on the Monday preceding the new league year.
  • The new league year is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, March 11.
  • The 2026 NFL Scouting Combine has concluded.
  • The 2026 NFL Draft is set to start on Thursday, April 23, 2026, in Pittsburgh, PA.

Roster Updates (Monday, March 9)

As of Monday, March 9, several key roster movements have already taken place, impacting both the Bills and other NFL teams as the new league year approaches.

  • Mitch Trubisky signed a two-year deal with the Tennessee Titans.
  • Reggie Gilliam signed a two-year deal with the New England Patriots, valued at up to $12 million, with $6 million guaranteed.
  • Connor McGovern re-signed with the Buffalo Bills.

Free Agent Classifications

Understanding the different classifications of free agents is crucial for following offseason roster moves, as each category dictates specific negotiation rules and team retention options.

  • Unrestricted Free Agents (UFAs):

Players whose contracts have expired and are free to sign with any team without restrictions.

  • Restricted Free Agents (RFAs):

Players whose contracts are concluded, but the team retains the right to offer a “qualifying offer.” If another team presents a contract, the Bills can either match the offer or receive draft pick compensation.

  • Exclusive Rights Free Agents (ERFAs):

Players with fewer than three years of NFL experience who are restricted to negotiating only with the Bills. If the Bills extend a minimum contract, these players can only play for Buffalo.
