American Hostage Kamran Hekmati Moved from Evin Prison; Family Seeks Answers
The family of American hostage Kamran Hekmati, detained in Iran since May 2025, has been informed that he is no longer at Evin Prison. The family stated they have not received confirmation of his whereabouts and have not communicated with Hekmati since learning of these reports.
They expressed cautious optimism and emphasized not wishing to jeopardize Hekmati's safety.
The family appealed to the Trump administration to prioritize the safety of Kamran Hekmati and all other Americans currently held in Iran.
Kamran Hekmati's Detention and Charges
Hekmati, a 70-year-old resident of Great Neck, New York, was imprisoned in Iran last summer while visiting family. Iranian authorities charged him with "making a trip to Israel" 13 years prior. Hekmati, a dual American-Iranian citizen and Persian Jew, traveled to Israel in 2012 for his son's Bar Mitzvah.
Broader Concerns for Americans in Iran
At least six Americans are known to be detained by the Iranian government. Their status during Operation Epic Fury, an ongoing military action, remains largely unknown.
Rumors and Heightened Dangers
A family representative, Kieran Ramsey, stated that information regarding the prison situation consists primarily of rumors.
These rumors include reports of prisoners potentially being used as human shields, prisoners being transferred to other facilities, and regular prison guards being replaced by special counter-terrorism police. Ramsey highlighted the dangers of an active war zone, especially for American prisoners, including those of Jewish faith, mentioning that Evin Prison has previously been targeted by Israeli military actions.
