ICC Denies Prioritizing England's T20 World Cup Travel Amid Controversy
World cricket authorities have denied allegations of prioritizing travel arrangements for England players over those from the West Indies and South Africa following their elimination from the Twenty20 World Cup in India. The West Indian and South African teams experienced extended stays in India after their tournament exit, prompting questions from players and coaches.
Player Concerns Emerge
England's team departed India shortly after losing their semi-final match against India. This rapid departure led West Indies coach Daren Sammy and South African players Quinton de Kock and David Miller to question the differing travel timelines.
Quinton de Kock stated on Instagram, "Funny [International Cricket Council], we have heard nothing! Meanwhile, England are leaving before us somehow? [The West Indies] and [South Africa’s men’s teams] are just in the dark! Strange how different teams have more pull than others."
David Miller commented on ESPNcricinfo's Instagram post, "Funny that England gets eliminated after WI & SA and gets on a charter back home tonight. While WI & SA still wait for answers in Kolkata."
ICC Responds to Allegations
On Wednesday, the International Cricket Council (ICC) issued a statement refuting the claims.
The ICC stated it "rejects any suggestion that these decisions have been driven by anything other than safety, feasibility and welfare."
The organization clarified that "There is no link between arrangements made in the cases of South Africa and the West Indies and those made previously for England or any other nation, which arose from separate circumstances, routing options and different travel conditions."
Departure Logistics Update
According to the ICC, the South Africa contingent was scheduled to begin departing for South Africa that night, with all members expected to leave within 36 hours.
For the West Indies, nine members of the contingent were already en route to the Caribbean. The remaining 16 members were booked on flights departing India within the next 24 hours.
