Sam Grlj Confirmed for Richmond Debut

Sam Grlj is confirmed to make his Australian Football League (AFL) debut for Richmond against Carlton on Thursday night at the MCG, marking the club's first debutant of the 2026 season.

Grlj was selected with pick eight in the 2025 AFL Draft. The 18-year-old has already demonstrated leadership and vocal communication on the field, attributes noted during the pre-season.

During pre-season matches against Essendon and Melbourne, Grlj played in the half-back position, where he was observed breaking lines and delivering the ball effectively.

His 2025 season at the Coates Talent League level was impressive, with averages of 20.3 disposals, 5.0 tackles, and 3.9 clearances. He also recorded 17 touches for Victoria Metro.

Further experience was gained playing for Richmond's VFL team in Round 19 and 20 of the previous season. Grlj's leadership capabilities are evident from his roles as captain of both the Vic Metro U18 side and his school team at Camberwell Grammar.

The 182cm player from Canterbury was primarily utilized in the midfield and half-back positions last season.

Grlj will make his debut in the match scheduled for Thursday night at 7:30 pm (AEDT) at the MCG.
