"Scarpetta" Series Overview

Jamie Lee Curtis and Nicole Kidman co-executive produce and star in "Scarpetta," a new mystery crime series from Prime Video.

Set to premiere on March 11, the series is based on Patricia Cornwell’s popular book series, which centers on forensic pathologist Dr. Kay Scarpetta.

Cast and Roles

  • Nicole Kidman portrays the titular character, Dr. Kay Scarpetta, a forensic pathologist who solves complex murders. She prepared for the role by spending time with a medical examiner in Tennessee to learn about scalpels and dissecting organs.
  • Jamie Lee Curtis plays Dorothy, Scarpetta’s sister. Curtis stated she initially had no intention of acting in the show but agreed to join at Kidman's request.
  • Bobby Cannavale plays Pete Marino, Kay’s former partner and Dorothy’s husband.
  • Simon Baker plays FBI profiler Benton Wesley, Scarpetta’s husband.
  • Ariana DeBose portrays Lucy, Dorothy’s tech-savvy daughter, primarily raised by Kay.

Production and Development Insights

The eight-episode season is led by showrunner Liz Sarnoff.

The series includes a companion storyline set in the 1990s, featuring Rosy McEwen as a younger Kay Scarpetta, Jake Cannavale as young Marino, and Hunter Parrish as young Benton.

Patricia Cornwell, who has sold over 120 million copies of the "Scarpetta" series, was heavily involved in the adaptation process. The book rights had been optioned previously with other actors attached, but these adaptations did not materialize.

Prime Video has ordered two seasons of "Scarpetta," aiming for it to be another successful novel adaptation, following shows like "Reacher" and "Jack Ryan."

Jamie Lee Curtis, whose company Comet Pictures produced the series, expressed hope that the show inspires young women in the industry regarding leadership roles.

Curtis also discussed her career longevity, stating a desire to conclude her acting career on her own terms. Kidman encouraged her to continue working.
