Bavarian Local Election Results Released

Voters in Germany's south-eastern state of Bavaria participated in local elections on Sunday to determine the composition of their local parliaments. The official results, released on Wednesday, indicate notable shifts in the regional political landscape.

The conservative CSU party secured 32.5% of the vote, marking its lowest local election result since 1952.

This performance represents a decrease from their 34.5% share in the 2020 election. The CSU is the sister-party to Chancellor Friedrich Merz's CDU.

Party Performance Highlights

The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) won 12.2% of the vote. This is a significant increase from the 4.7% it achieved in the state's previous local election.

The Green party placed second with 13.6% of the vote, although they experienced losses compared to their 2020 performance.

The Social Democratic Party (SPD) finished third with 12.3%, a historic low for the federal coalition partner.
