The Assault and Guilty Plea

A Perth mother, Chloe Wright, was assaulted by her then-partner, Guy Cramp, in November, an incident captured on CCTV while Cramp held their nine-week-old baby. Cramp pleaded guilty to the assault in January.

Extensive Criminal History

His criminal record spans 15 years. It includes convictions for assaulting two other women and taxi drivers, alleged assaults on police officers, bail breaches, and violations of restraining orders.

Controversial Bail Decision

Despite prosecutors voicing significant concerns about Cramp's history and arguing that no conditions could mitigate the risk he posed, Magistrate Paul Lyons granted him bail on February 19.

Prosecutors voiced significant concerns about Cramp's history, arguing that no conditions could mitigate the risk he posed.

At the time of the assault on Wright, Cramp was already on bail for alleged assaults on two police officers and had recently been released from prison for assaulting a taxi driver.

Victim's Reaction and Departure

Wright reported feeling in disbelief and fearing for her life following the bail decision. She subsequently fled the country with her three children.

The Department of Communities' child protection unit assisted her in securing emergency accommodation and leaving Australia.

Bail Conditions and Rationale

Bail conditions for Cramp included:

  • Being banned from Wright's suburb.
  • Being banned from her children's school.
  • Wearing an ankle monitor.
  • Reporting to Joondalup Police Station twice weekly.

The magistrate's decision to grant bail was based on a report that found Cramp "marginally" suitable for a domestic violence offenders program, a course that necessitates participation outside of custody.

This was determined to meet the "exceptional circumstances" required to grant bail to a violent offender.

Cramp stated in court he wished to change for his son. He is currently residing at his parents' property and posted a $1000 personal undertaking and a $1000 surety.

Upcoming Sentencing

Sentencing for the assault on Wright is scheduled for April 16.
