German Paralympians Protest Russian Participation at Milano Cortina Games
German Paralympians have initiated protests against Russia's participation at the Milano Cortina Games. Silver medallist Linn Kazmaier and her guide, Florian Baumann, are currently under investigation by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) for turning their backs on the Russian national anthem and wearing their winter hats during a cross-country medal ceremony. This incident followed the victory of Russia's Anastasiia Bagiian and her guide, Sergei Siniakin, in the women's sprint classic vision-impaired event.
Kazmaier articulated their stance, stating:
"We decided to keep our hats on and not turn towards the flags, because we don't support that."
Baumann echoed this sentiment, adding:
"I simply do not think it is right that the IPC has decided Russia can compete here under its own flag, with its own anthem and with a full band, while the Ukrainians are also here."
The IPC confirmed on Wednesday that it is "aware of the situation, gathering evidence and analysing it."
Russia's Participation
Russia has so far secured six medals, including four golds, at the Milano Cortina Games. Anastasiia Bagiian is among six Russian and four Belarusian athletes invited by the IPC to compete under their respective national flags. This specific decision regarding their participation has drawn condemnation from several other countries.
Ukrainian Allegations
The Ukrainian Paralympic Committee has reported that its athletes and coaches have been "subjected to systematic pressure" from the IPC and Milan-Cortina organizers. They cited multiple concerning incidents.
These include an organizing committee member allegedly compelling them to remove the country's flag from their accommodation building. Another incident involved a representative of the IPC "harshly" attempting to confiscate earrings displaying the Ukrainian flag with "Stop War" written on them from para-biathlete Oleksandra Kononova.
The Ukrainian body further accused the IPC of maintaining "a very special partnership" with the national Paralympic committees of Russia and Belarus. In response, the Organising Committees for the Olympic Games (OCOG) stated:
"We are reviewing the matters referenced, several of which we are hearing about for the first time."
Ukraine has won 10 medals, including three golds, at the Games.
