Wests Tigers Star Makasini Open to Rugby Union Switch Post-2027

Heamasi Makasini, the 18-year-old dual-sport athlete contracted to the Wests Tigers until the end of 2027, has indicated that a potential switch to rugby union is a definitive option for his professional career. This significant development emerges as Makasini prepares for his second NRL game, with Wests Tigers coach Benji Marshall expressing the club's firm commitment to retaining the player beyond his current contract.

Makasini's Contract and Code-Switch Ambitions

Heamasi Makasini signed a three-year deal with the Wests Tigers in 2024, securing his tenure with the NRL club until the conclusion of the 2027 season. Upon the expiration of this contract, Makasini will become a free agent, making him eligible to negotiate with both NRL teams and international rugby union clubs.

Makasini has explicitly stated that a transition to rugby union is "100 per cent an option" for his future. He brings a strong rugby union pedigree, having previously represented Australia at the junior level in the code. During a prior contract season, Makasini's preference reportedly leaned towards rugby union before he ultimately decided to stay with the Tigers, citing the club's overall direction.

Marshall emphasized the player's importance, stating, "Heamasi is really important to us," and indicated that the club would "prioritise whatever we need to do to make sure he stays here."

Makasini is scheduled to play in the centres for the Tigers' season-opening match against North Queensland at Leichhardt Oval this Saturday. He also scored a try in his NRL debut last season, showcasing his early potential.
