Regional Gas Prices Rise Due to Middle East Instability and Oil Market Dynamics

Regional Gas Prices Surge in Philadelphia Area

Gas prices in the five-county Philadelphia area have increased by 42 cents in the past week, according to AAA. This rise has led to increased costs for motorists.

Factors Influencing Price Surge

AAA and industry experts attribute the increase primarily to violence in the Middle East, which has driven oil prices to their highest levels in four years. Crude oil constitutes 50-60 percent of a gallon of gasoline, directly impacting pump prices.

Chris Kitchens, chair of chemical and biological engineering at Villanova University, indicated that oil prices reached $100 per barrel earlier this week. The closure at the Strait of Hormuz is cited as a significant cause. Kitchens noted that approximately 20 percent of global oil originates from the Persian Gulf, and disruptions in this area affect the international market.

Legislative Response

In response to affordability concerns, State Senator Lisa Boscola has introduced legislation in Pennsylvania to implement a 60-day suspension of gas and diesel taxes. The state's gasoline tax is approximately 57 cents per gallon, one of the highest nationally. This proposal aims to mitigate affordability concerns for Pennsylvania residents and businesses.
