Eritrea's Private Media Crackdown

Following its independence from Ethiopia, Eritrea experienced a period during which private media outlets flourished.

In September 2001, the Eritrean government initiated the closure of these private press operations.

The government stated that the reason for these actions was that the private press was "endangering national security." Subsequent to the closures, several journalists were incarcerated.
