Giant Steel Pipe Emerges from Ground in Osaka

On March 11, a large steel pipe emerged unexpectedly from the ground in Osaka's Kita Ward, Japan. The incident occurred around 6:50 am local time beneath a busy road.

A passerby reported the pipe, which officials later confirmed was a steel pipe designated for a sewer tunnel construction project.

The pipe measured approximately 27 meters in length and 3.5 meters in diameter, rising more than 10 meters above ground level at its peak.

Road Closures and Emergency Response

The event resulted in the closure of a 600-meter section of road and a partial shutdown of the elevated portion of the route, causing traffic congestion. Authorities noted that the pipe did not impact the elevated roadway.

Emergency crews stabilized the pipe by drilling into it and filling it with water. This process gradually caused the pipe to retract into the ground.

Ongoing Investigation

The Osaka City Construction Bureau is currently investigating the cause of the pipe's unexpected emergence.
